The stand up was pretty even. So was the grappling until the very end. Maia wins RNC in third.

Re: UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Askren Discussion Thread
Askren continuing to try to take down Maia and grapple with him was ill advised, but with Askren having maybe the worst standup in the UFC his choices were limited, CC and Usman used their wrestling as defense while beating Maia on the feet for most part. Askren trying td's against Maia reminded me of Cain taking down Werdum.

Askren is essentially 0-3 in the UFC now....yes he was gifted the win against Lawler but really he idn't win that fight.....but regardless, he has not proved to anyone he is much more than an average fighter

There's zero shame in losing to the guys he's lost to imo. Maia will submit anyone who's willing to go the ground with him, Masvidal has become a top fighter with his style of not giving a fuck. Lawler he did beat, Lawler has zero issue with the outcome.

Well that's just it, taking Maia down multiple times will only lead to bad things which it did, and that's Askren waking up looking at the ref above him just like did in last fight. not sure who Askren should fight next but i think he is a little more humble after these last 2 fights.

Askren has the official W for the Lawler fight, but he didn't win it, and it's not so much the loses, it's how bad he's lookedHired_Merc wrote:Kickass32 wrote:Askren is essentially 0-3 in the UFC now....yes he was gifted the win against Lawler but really he idn't win that fight.....but regardless, he has not proved to anyone he is much more than an average fighter

Askren looked awful, but he always does......but usually manages to bully his opponent and smother them on the ground...….not Maia! To be fair to Ben, he's faced elite WW's, no shame in losing but it's not a sign he will ever be a challenger.
Thought this card delivered above expectation given the poor quality, but one big plus was Cyril Gane, that dude looks legit...….and given a bit of time, a possible contender at HW.

Re: UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Askren Discussion Thread
Was really up for this one, ju jitsu vs wrestler, and this time the jits was tops.
I've been a fan of Ben Askren, but can't disagree that since finding higher level opposition in the UFC, he has not set the world on fire, nor has he backed up much of the trash he's famous for talking. Didn't read the article, but saw a headline today saying Askren was considering retirement...
Also been a fan of Damian Maia for years, as nobody does modern ju jitsu in an MMA context better. If you can keep him off of you with powerful striking and takedown defense, he's proven he can be neutralized, but if you can't, you pretty much end up where Askren did, waking up trying to figure out what happened, or discovering which of your joints have been damaged. Great win for Maia, and could be a career turning point for Askren...

There is a place in the UFC for Askren, much like there is for most decent fighters as long as the matchups are made correctly.

Exactly, lots of potential fights for him he just has to realize now that he isnt the fighter he thinks he is and will likely never be champ in the UFC.

I actually wouldn't mind an Askren vs. Pettis fight
