Corona Virus Thread
I couldn't think of an appropriate title for the thread, so I didn't bother.
Anyone being affected by this? I work in Specsavers, we've had to cancell ALL routine sight tests. Only booking emergency appointments at the moment, we've been told to stay open by the NHS. But, I don't see how they can pay us our wages on what we'll be doing in next few months. I fully expect pay cut, hours cut or even worse redundancy. Find out today what's going on.
Please everyone stay safe, keep social distancing, wash your hands and sneeze/cough in elbows or shoulders.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
Well my place of employment is closing for 6 business days as of Friday, not for our safety but because of projected low sales in the near future. They are paying us for these 6 days but rumor has it they are going to close longer at which time no pay, or vacation time will have to be used to secure income. My daughter is a kinisiologist and the clinic she works in has closed until April 1 with no pay. My wife's job has closed the doors to the public but she still has to go in, she works in the welfare department so she will likely get busier as the rest of the province slows down

My hours got cut by half. Only going to be working 3 days a week now. I can just about afford rent and bills. Going to be like this for the next 3 months.

The entire auto industry is shutting down here for a minimum 6 working days. Toyota is going 2 weeks......but again, it's not out of the goodness of their hearts with their employees health a priority, its because of sales forecasts

Could be but with case numbers still getting up its hard to say when. Our man-boy P.M. put us in massive debt during a good economy and now with all the job losses and money put out for stimulus we are going to be so far in the hole in will be impossible to get out of....and it was to far gone as it was.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
Partner been told her job is done for next 3 months. Being paid this week, then don't know when she'll be paid again. Government have been pretty good in UK, they'll pay 80% of wages of places forced to close. By the employer needs to apply for it, there's very little details on that right now. My hours cut by half, brother has lost his job from it. We can JUST about pay rent and bills, food.. eh food will be another issue will cross that bridge when get to it. Partner probably can't pay for her car. I've made a Universal Credit claim, put my partner on that also for a joint claim. Universal Credit, is benefits in the UK. Absolute nightmare, but everyone in same boat right now, some far worse.

It appears some construction is deemed essential. I had a look at Doug Ford's list of what essential services will stay open........gawd damn basically everything is staying open. Officially been made furlough'd. Gonna have 80% of my wages being paid, and I can't work. UK in full lockdown in next 3 weeks. But the furlough is a 3 month plan, so my plan is to essentially work out and see what happens. Try keep myself mentally healthy.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
The Ontario "shutdown" is a fricken joke. They said they were shutting down all non essential services, but the list of places allowed to stay open is HUGE....no shutdown at all really.
And yes, mental health is going to be a huge concern across the world over the next few months

Some jobs in my town did get shut down while others didnt. The job I'm on is still on going as all the people in building have been sent home and we have a full time custodian keeping the place sanitised for us while renovations are taking place. It'a a big building with 4 floors and about 10-12 guys working so its actually quite safe considering we mostly can keep our 6ft distance for the most part.

The numbers haven't peaked yet, they are still climbing daily. Once they have plateaued and we see no new cases for 7 straight days we can SLOWLY get back to some sort of normalcy. The question obviously is, how long will it be before we get to the point of 7 straight days of no new numbers.

That's crazy to think about...The thing about this disease is while it's not that deadly but it seems to be spread to easily which is the main prob with it....It has gone to almost every country in no time.

Oh shit, where'd you see that? No one in the UK is reporting airborne at the moment. UK still in lockdown. Idiots going out to beaches and all that still, the weather is beautiful but got to think of the bigger picture. My partner's sister is pregnant, she's going out to beaches having people over her flat etc. She's not a great person anyway, but risking all that? Not worth it. The best thing that has come out of the whole situation, is the planet has clearly had the chance to recover. Biggest shame is that it all goes back to normality once the whole thing blows over.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
I think I read it was in California where they were speculating it was likely spreading airborne as the cases increased so rapidly, maybe it was NY, either way.....but I don't think they provided any solid evidence, more just speculation but they seemed pretty sure of themselves.
I'm removed from any big to mid size city. I am 40 minutes from a city of 150K and 100 minutes away from Toronto so where I am there isn't a whole lot of cases, still single digit confirmed cases in our general radius. I go out to walk the dog twice a day along our waterfront paths in the town, very few people are out. in each 30 minute walk I might encounter 5 or 6 different people but in passing we spread apart and keep at least 10 feet apart. Grocery stores are limiting the number of people in the stores at any one time so there is a lineup outside waiting to get in. Once in it's a one way street system, one aisle you can only go down, next aisle you can only go up etc... but not everyone knows or follows these directions, and in my limited experience at the stores I notice it's mostly the elderly not following the rules, which is odd as they are the most susceptible

UK death toll has reached 10, 000. There's 94 cases in my county, that have been confirmed and tested. Numbers are way higher I think.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
Especially with countries that really dont have that much testing available yet. South America is just getting warmed up with some big numbers and of course Africa, southern Asia and Eastern Europe are getting more cases.
I live in a small city 3 hrs from the next city, we only have had about 10 cases in a big radius of us and all cases have been from travel.
The other threat of this disease is the economic one especially if it continues, Many people live check to check as it is even with the government help that wont be enough should this carry on for too long.

Re: Corona Virus Thread
And that's going to be a problem going forward as the economic toll will out weight the health risks for many people. To most its a severe flu but to a slim few its a death sentence and thats a risk it seems people will be willing to make should this go on longer which it seems is the case.
